“Major Fire in Greenwich Industrial Unit Sends Smoke Across London”

Date:

Around 70 firefighters worked to control a large fire at an industrial unit on Tunnel Avenue in Greenwich, London. Ten fire engines responded to the incident reported at 6.13pm by the London Fire Brigade.

Due to the smoke in the area, the northbound lanes of the Blackwall Tunnel, Silvertown Tunnel, and the Blackwall Tunnel Approach from the Sun in the Sands Roundabout were closed. London Fire Brigade utilized two 32-metre turntable ladders as water towers to aid in extinguishing the fire from above.

Although the fire was contained almost an hour ago, heavy smoke remains in the vicinity. A decision by multiple agencies led to the closure of several roads due to smoke movement, with residents advised to keep windows and doors shut.

Charlton Athletic FC issued a travel advisory to its supporters post a home game due to road closures caused by the fire incident.

While the fire was controlled by 9.04pm, it has not been completely extinguished. As of 9.30pm, the London Fire Brigade stated that the fire was still generating a significant amount of smoke, and firefighters will continue their efforts to fully extinguish the blaze.

The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time. Multiple roads are shut down due to safety concerns arising from the fire and smoke, with alternative routes recommended for northbound drivers. Southbound traffic through the Blackwall Tunnel may also face disruptions.

The fire originated at an industrial unit on Tunnel Avenue in Greenwich, London. Fire crews from various stations, including East Greenwich, Greenwich, Deptford, and Poplar, were deployed to the scene by the London Fire Brigade.
