“Lidl Beats Aldi as UK’s Most Budget-Friendly Supermarket”

Date:

Lidl has secured the title of the most budget-friendly supermarket according to Which? for the second time in recent months, outpacing Aldi.

In October, a shopping list comprising 70 items at Lidl averaged £120.46, or £120.38 for members of its loyalty program, Lidl Plus. The identical basket at Aldi came to an average of £121.

Which? analysis revealed that Aldi has been recognized as the cheapest supermarket 22 times in the past 24 months. The list of 70 items included branded and own-brand products like Birds Eye Peas, Hovis bread, milk, and butter.

For Tesco shoppers, the bill would have totaled £134.89 last month, or £133.38 with a Clubcard. Sainsbury’s totalled £139.68, or £136.79 with a Nectar card.

Additionally, Which? compares prices for a longer list of 187 items, but excludes Aldi and Lidl due to their smaller product range compared to other supermarkets.

Asda remained the most cost-effective for a larger shopping list, priced at £469.11. The same basket would have cost £476.11 for Tesco Clubcard holders and £481.34 at Morrisons with a More loyalty card.

Waitrose emerged as the priciest option for both smaller and larger shopping lists. The analysis includes special offer prices and loyalty prices where applicable, excluding multi-buy deals.

Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, stated, “Lidl has clinched the top position as the UK’s most economical supermarket once again, demonstrating its ability to outperform Aldi even for non-loyalty scheme members.” She added, “High food prices remain a concern for many households, especially approaching Christmas. Our analysis highlights the importance of comparing prices; opting for one supermarket over another could save you 26%.”
