MP Warns: Farage’s Opposition Endangers Children Online

Date:

A member of Parliament from the Labour party has cautioned that Nigel Farage’s opposition to the Online Safety Act could lead to the accessibility of inappropriate content to children through digital devices.

Emily Darlington, who serves on the tech committee in Westminster, emphasized the importance of the bill in safeguarding children from online dangers, highlighting the failure of critics to acknowledge the real-life consequences of online abuse.

The MP for Milton Keynes Central also expressed concerns about the prevalence of catfishing among young individuals in her local community.

In an exclusive interview with The Mirror, Darlington stated, “The Labour Government aims to restrict access to explicit content, while Nigel Farage is advocating for the repeal of the Online Safety Act, potentially allowing such content to reach children through digital platforms.”

She further questioned the implications of removing such regulations, emphasizing that it is crucial to protect children from harmful content online.

Reform UK has opposed the legislation, arguing that it restricts free speech and does not effectively safeguard children. Darlington, who has confronted online offenders previously, also shared distressing accounts of catfishing incidents affecting young people.

According to Darlington, a significant number of young individuals in her constituency have encountered strangers online, including individuals with malicious intentions such as groomers and predators.

She highlighted the dangers of grooming and emphasized that such harmful activities often transition from online platforms to real-life interactions, causing severe harm to vulnerable youths. Reform UK did not provide any comments in response to inquiries.
