An expert from British Gas has shared a cost-effective solution for fixing cold areas in your radiator. By using a simple tool that costs just 97p, you can address this common issue.
If you notice cold spots at the top of your radiator, hear gurgling noises, or experience slow heating, it may be time to bleed your radiator. This process is relatively straightforward but requires the use of specific equipment.
To carry out the task, you will need a radiator key, which can be purchased for as little as 97p from Screwfix. Bleeding a radiator involves releasing any trapped air within the system.
Before beginning the bleeding process, it is crucial to turn off your heating system, as advised by Peter Knowles, a technical repair engineer at British Gas.
Ensure that the radiator has completely cooled down before commencing the procedure to avoid any risk of burns from hot water.
Prepare by having an old towel and a container handy to catch the water that will be released. Once ready, locate the small valve on the radiator and use the key to turn it anti-clockwise.

Peter advised, “Gently open the valve until you hear a hissing sound, indicating the release of trapped air. Once water starts to come out, collect it in the container provided. Then, tighten the valve and repeat the process for other radiators.”
It is essential not to over-bleed the radiator, as this can lead to a drop in boiler pressure. If issues persist, Peter recommended seeking assistance from a gas safe registered engineer.</
