“Discover Cinque Terre: Scenic Train Journey for £13/day”

Date:

Train travel offers a unique way to experience the world, allowing you to enjoy breathtaking views at a relaxed pace from the comfort of your train compartment. Despite the common perception of train journeys being expensive, one of the most stunning train routes globally can be enjoyed for just £13 per day.

This exceptional journey provides the opportunity to explore five captivating coastal destinations filled with historic sites, hiking trails, and more. Cinque Terre, meaning ‘Five Lands’ in Italian, comprises a cluster of charming fishing villages nestled along the Ligurian Riviera in northwest Italy. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, this picturesque region features colorful houses, cobblestone streets, lush vineyards, and beautiful beaches leading to the turquoise waters of the sea.

The Cinque Terre Express traverses this rugged coastline, offering a scenic half-hour ride from Levanto to La Spezia. The route showcases stunning views of secluded coves and enchanting Italian villages. The train stops at Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore, allowing passengers to disembark and explore each village at their own pace. Operating every 20 minutes during peak hours, the train offers flexibility for travelers to craft their unique adventure.

Among the villages, Vernazza stands out for its picturesque beauty, featuring narrow lanes lined with vibrant houses and local shops. Cars are prohibited in this village, enhancing its authentic Italian charm. At the Porto di Vernazza, visitors can indulge in seafood dishes while admiring the scenic harbor views or opt for a boat excursion along the expansive coastline.

Monterosso al Mare, the largest village, is a popular choice for its expansive sandy beaches and relatively flat terrain, providing a pleasant respite after exploring the hilly streets. The village’s crystal-clear waters attract beachgoers looking to relax on public sands or rent beach chairs for the day. Exploring the old town reveals historical landmarks like the Aurora Tower and remnants of the Fieschi Castle.

With 48 hiking trails along the coast, Cinque Terre serves as a hub for hikers accessing various routes via the train. While some trails can be challenging, beginners can enjoy the Riomaggiore to Manarola route, a 30-minute trek offering breathtaking sea views.

For convenient exploration of the area, travelers can consider the Cinque Terre MS Card, providing unlimited train travel on the route. The off-peak day pass, priced at €14.80 (approximately £13), offers excellent value. Longer visits can be planned with two or three-day tickets priced at €26.50 and €31.50 (around £23 and £27), respectively.

During peak seasons, day passes for adults may cost up to €32.50 (over £28), still offering great value. Additionally, the pass includes access to paid hiking trails between Monterosso and Corniglia. Peak tickets also grant bus access within the Parco Nazionale delle Cinque Terre, facilitating access to secluded walking paths.
