At least three individuals were swiftly taken to the hospital following a shooting incident at a shopping center amidst the Black Friday sales, causing shoppers to seek refuge. The unsettling event took place at the Westfield Valley Fair Mall in San Jose, California, prompting a search for the perpetrator. Police have confirmed that multiple individuals are receiving medical treatment for gunshot injuries.
The victims of the attack include a man, a woman, and a 16-year-old girl, all wounded in the incident that occurred at 5:40 pm local time the previous day, as stated by Sergeant Jorge Garibay of the San Jose Police Department. Authorities have labeled the occurrence as an “isolated incident” and assured the public that there is no ongoing threat.
According to reports, the shooting transpired following a dispute between the suspected shooter and the male victim, inadvertently involving the two female victims. Witnesses described chaotic scenes, with Shawn Kulasingham recounting hearing a loud noise followed by a rush of people, prompting a stampede and causing the building to shake.
Kulasingham and his family sought refuge in a nearby store, Abercrombie & Fitch, hiding behind racks and cabinets as panic ensued. Store security at Bloomingdales also took swift action, directing around 20 customers, including Bilal Zuberi and his wife, into storage closets for safety. Although no shots were heard, a sense of panic prevailed, leading to an announcement instructing everyone to stay put as a precaution.
