11 individuals have been apprehended following the tragic demise of an entire family during their vacation in Turkey. The family, consisting of a mother, father, and their two young children, fell seriously ill in their hotel room in Istanbul and subsequently passed away, with suspicions initially pointing to food poisoning.
The family had been exploring local street food options in the city earlier that day before falling ill. However, authorities are now focusing on a pesticide allegedly utilized in the hotel to eliminate bedbugs. This development has led to the arrest of multiple individuals, including hotel staff, amidst concerns that the pesticide, aluminum phosphide, used in a room on the hotel’s ground floor, may have contaminated the family’s room through the bathroom ventilation system, causing their poisoning.
Aluminum phosphide, a potent toxic substance commonly used as a pesticide, can be fatal if inhaled in high concentrations. Investigators also discovered that at least one employee of the pest control company responsible for the hotel’s treatment lacked the necessary certification.
Subsequent to the incident, the hotel has been evacuated and sealed off for further investigation. Law enforcement officials have been collecting samples from various areas within the building for analysis, including bedsheets, pillows, water bottles, and blankets. Additionally, belongings of two other hotel guests, an Italian and a Moroccan tourist, were removed after they also exhibited symptoms of poisoning and were hospitalized.
Footage depicted the Bocek family, hailing from Hamburg, Germany, arriving at the hotel in Istanbul at the beginning of their holiday. Following complaints of nausea, vomiting, and dizziness after a day of sightseeing, they sought medical attention. Tragically, the mother and children succumbed to the poisoning shortly after, while the father passed away after a week in intensive care.
The investigation into the incident continues, with toxicology tests ongoing on samples obtained from the victims and the hotel. Family members are seeking justice for their loss, with the children’s grandfather expressing intent to hold those responsible accountable and seek severe penalties for any wrongdoing.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has assured that thorough investigations will be conducted to determine the circumstances leading to the family’s tragic deaths.
