Millions of users in the UK are familiar with a major challenge faced when trying to access the internet. The issue of online congestion is particularly frustrating during nighttime hours when households are engaged in activities like streaming movies, downloading files, and video calling friends.
Typically, download speeds remain fast and reliable during working hours when fewer people are online. However, in the evenings when households become active after work, local networks can become overwhelmed, leading to significant slowdowns in speeds.
To illustrate, broadband operates similarly to a motorway – the more traffic it handles simultaneously, the slower the overall movement. This is why many households experience a noticeable decline in performance between 7 pm and 11 pm.
A recent study by Broadband Genie has revealed the UK areas most impacted by slowdowns during peak times, with Wigan (WN1) topping the list. In this region, average download speeds drop from 167Mbps during off-peak hours to just 75Mbps in the evening, marking a 55% decrease.
Other areas heavily affected by evening congestion include Galashiels (TD1), Harrogate (HG1), Exeter (EX1), and Rochester (ME1).
The study also highlighted that not all parts of the UK face slowdowns during evening hours. Some areas actually experience an improvement in speeds. Newport ranked highest in the study, followed by Oxford, Glasgow, Blackburn, and Cambridge.
Broadband Genie explained, “Have you ever noticed your broadband slowing down in the evening? Just like our roads, internet networks can experience congestion. We analyzed 144,509 broadband speed tests to identify the locations where broadband performance changes most during peak times. Customers in Wigan experienced the largest drop, with average speeds falling by 55% during the busiest hours.”
The report also pointed out regional variations across the UK, with Scotland leading in overall broadband performance improvement during evenings. Wales and the East of England also showed strong performance.
On the contrary, the South West ranked lowest, experiencing around a 15% decrease in average speeds during peak periods compared to daytime performance.
Broadband experts suggest several ways households can enhance their home connections, including placing routers in open, central locations away from obstructions to improve signal quality. Providers like Virgin Media recommend regular router reboots to address temporary network issues.
