Serbian President Accused in ‘Human Safari’ Scandal

Date:

Serbia’s current president faces serious allegations of involvement in so-called “human safaris” where wealthy tourists reportedly paid large sums to participate in the killing of innocent civilians for pleasure. Startling accusations have emerged claiming that foreigners paid £70,000 for the opportunity to shoot individuals in Sarajevo during the ’90s while the city was under siege. These claims have been brought to light in a court in Milan. Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, endured a prolonged military blockade from 1992 to 1996, besieged by Serb forces.

Investigative reporter Domagoj Margetic has alleged that President Aleksandar Vučić of Serbia was linked to these activities between 1992 and 1993, purportedly serving in a Bosnian Serb militia during that time. The allegations resurfaced following a disturbing video showing Slavko Aleksic, the leader of the militia, standing beside a car with a human skull on the hood, believed to be a result of the inhumane hunting expeditions.

Margetic claims to possess evidence linking Vučić to the events in wartime Sarajevo when the president was in his twenties. The journalist has reported his findings to the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Milan. In response to the allegations, Vučić denied any involvement, labeling the accusations as malicious disinformation aimed at tarnishing his reputation and that of Serbia. His spokesperson clarified that at the time in question, Vučić was working as a journalist and translator in a nearby town called Pale, emphasizing that he was not engaged in combat activities or wartime operations.

In a letter to prosecutors in Milan, Margetic asserted that he had evidence implicating Vučić as a “war volunteer” with the New Sarajevo Chetnik Detachment of the Army of Republika Srpska, led by Aleksic. This militia allegedly used a Jewish cemetery as a strategic location for snipers. Additionally, Margetic referenced a 1994 interview where Vučić reportedly admitted to volunteering during the siege of Sarajevo. The journalist also cited a 1993 video purportedly showing the president carrying a rifle alongside armed individuals in the Jewish cemetery.

Contrary to the allegations, Vučić has insisted that he was not armed during the Sarajevo siege, claiming he was simply holding an umbrella or tripod while working as a journalist. He maintains that he did not partake in any violent activities during that period. Italian investigative journalist Ezio Gavazzeni recently filed a complaint alleging that affluent foreigners paid to target defenseless civilians, with varying rates depending on the gender and age of the victims. These individuals, reportedly linked to far-right groups, would allegedly fly from Trieste to Belgrade before heading to the outskirts of Sarajevo to carry out the attacks from Serbian positions.
