The leader of the renowned Caledonian Sleeper has suggested potential future destinations as the train initiates services from Birmingham. The Sleeper made its debut stop at Birmingham International on Thursday evening, picking up passengers at 10.44pm before heading to Scotland.
This new service, connecting Birmingham to Scotland after a 30-year hiatus, signifies a significant achievement for Caledonian Sleeper. Managing Director Graham Kelly mentioned that discussions were ongoing about additional stops, with a focus on potential destinations like Manchester. Kelly explained that the feasibility of adding Manchester as a stop hinges on logistical challenges, particularly related to scheduling.
Regarding expansion plans, Kelly hinted at the likelihood of adding more Scottish locations in the future. Manchester does not currently have any sleeper train services, making it a promising option for the Caledonian Sleeper to consider. Introducing a Manchester stop could offer travelers a convenient overnight travel option to Scotland or London.
The Birmingham service on Thursday featured a traditional Scottish performance by bagpiper Lorne MacDougall. Among the passengers was railway enthusiast Francis Bourgeois, en route to Inverness. Kelly commended the collaborative effort that led to incorporating Birmingham into the existing timetable without the need for extra rolling stock.
Emphasizing the environmental benefits, Kelly highlighted that the Sleeper produces significantly lower CO2 emissions compared to car and air travel. Operating at 90% capacity in 2025, the addition of the Birmingham stop is projected to bring the service closer to full capacity, with ticket prices remaining unchanged.
Addressing concerns about seating options, Kelly explained the restrictions on reclining seats in the UK rail industry but mentioned adjustments like dimming cabin lights based on customer feedback.
