Keir Starmer has strongly criticized Nigel Farage, urging him to thoroughly investigate any additional connections between Reform and Russia.
During a parliamentary update, Starmer expressed astonishment and concern over a former high-ranking member of Farage’s party, Nathan Gill, being sentenced to over a decade in prison for accepting Russian bribes. Gill, the former Welsh leader of Reform UK, confessed to delivering prepared speeches while serving as a European Parliament member.
Addressing the Commons, Starmer emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “It is alarming that a prominent official, a leader in Wales, has received a substantial prison sentence of over ten years for accepting pro-Russia bribes. This is highly unusual.” He further called on the Reform leadership to conduct a thorough investigation into how such events transpired within their party and to uncover any other potential ties.
In response to Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch’s criticism of Reform, Starmer highlighted the incompatibility of Reform’s pro-Putin stance with global issues, particularly in light of Vladimir Putin’s recent aggressive actions. Badenoch condemned Reform for attributing blame to NATO for Russia’s aggressive behavior, highlighting the disgraceful nature of having a former Welsh leader imprisoned for accepting bribes from Putin.
Pressure is mounting on Farage to initiate an investigation to determine the extent of Gill’s wrongdoing. Gill, who admitted to multiple counts of blackmail, served as a UKIP and Brexit Party MEP from 2014 to 2020.
Deputy leader of Reform UK, Richard Tice, condemned Vladimir Putin as a dictator and dismissed criticisms as mere distractions. Tice reiterated his and Reform’s unwavering support for Ukraine, citing personal contributions made to aid Ukrainian soldiers. Despite ongoing scrutiny, Farage emphasized that his party is not a law enforcement agency.
Gill’s receipt of substantial payments from former Ukrainian MP Oleg Voloshyn, at the behest of pro-Russia figure Viktor Medvedchuk, has raised further concerns. Medvedchuk, a close associate of Putin, faced accusations of high treason and was later extradited to Russia following the 2022 Russian invasion.
