“Starmer Condemns Putin’s Attacks on Ukraine as ‘Abhorrent'”

Date:

Keir Starmer expressed deep shock upon witnessing the rescue of a teenage girl from the rubble in Ukraine while he was celebrating his own daughter’s birthday. The girl, whose mother tragically died in an attack in Kyiv, was of a similar age to Starmer’s 15-year-old daughter. Starmer condemned Vladimir Putin’s ongoing assaults as “abhorrent” during an update in the Commons.

Starmer disclosed that his family had marked his daughter’s 15th birthday the previous night, only to be confronted with distressing news footage of a girl of the same age being saved from a collapsed building where her mother had perished. He described the situation as “abhorrent” and “beyond belief.”

The Prime Minister is set to engage in crucial discussions with 36 members of the ‘coalition of the willing,’ a group of nations collaborating to secure peace in Ukraine. He highlighted recent conversations with Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky, emphasizing the United States’ efforts to end the conflict and prevent further bloodshed.

Starmer commended the progress made in negotiations, particularly regarding security guarantees and an updated peace framework between the US and Ukraine. He assured the House of ongoing efforts to refine the peace plan, acknowledging that there is still a challenging journey ahead but reaffirming a strong commitment to the cause.

Emphasizing the importance of Ukraine’s central role in peace talks, Starmer shared insights from discussions with world leaders in South Africa, stressing the urgent need to remove Russian oil and gas from the global market. He condemned Putin’s relentless attacks on civilians and critical energy infrastructure, highlighting the devastation caused by Russian airstrikes in Ukraine.

Starmer called attention to Russia’s recent military actions, including drone strikes and missile attacks resulting in civilian casualties like seven-year-old Amelia. The Prime Minister reiterated the unwavering resolve to push forward in the peace process despite the daunting obstacles ahead.
