Storm Claudia has triggered extensive flooding, as videos show bins and cars floating in submerged waters.
The Met Office issued amber rain warnings for regions spanning from central Wales to Lincolnshire, accompanied by life-threatening alerts. A significant amount of rain hit England and Wales today, leading to flooding in various areas.
Meteorologists at the Met Office warned of the potential for approximately 80mm of rain in the East Midlands and elevated areas in Wales. The intense rainfall was evident in Birmingham, where locals documented the impact of heavy rain on the city.
One video posted on social media showed cars partially submerged in water in Handsworth, Birmingham. The footage revealed several cars with hazard lights blinking, nearly engulfed by rising water levels.
In another video, floodwater rushed between two houses, submerging an entire road in Ewas Harold, Hertfordshire. The clip depicted fast-flowing water inundating the street and climbing up the house exteriors.
A separate video shared by a Labour Councillor showcased flooded streets in Birmingham, with water even spilling onto the pavement.
In a social media post, the Councillor stated: “Storm Claudia is causing heavy rainfall and localized flooding in parts of Birmingham, including Stratford Road. Our council teams are working tirelessly with emergency services to address flood risks, clear drains, and ensure resident safety.
“I urge everyone to stay indoors if possible, avoid flooded areas, and exercise caution when traveling. We appreciate the efforts of our staff, emergency services, and volunteers who are dedicated to safeguarding our city during this severe weather event.”
Rebekah Hicks, Chief Forecaster at the Met Office, commented: “Storm Claudia is currently causing heavy rainfall in parts of England and Wales. We have already recorded 81.8mm of rain, with persistent downpours expected to continue into the evening before easing overnight.
“Affected areas will gradually experience lighter rainfall on Saturday morning, eventually leading to drier conditions by the afternoon and into Sunday. There remains a risk of flooding, so it is crucial for people to stay informed about local flood warnings and take necessary precautions.”
