A father has raised concerns for parents regarding a concealed hazard found in children’s water bottles following a troubling revelation he made. In a recent video on TikTok, Jason Sullivon shared his experience of trying to thoroughly clean the reusable bottles his daughter uses daily, only to realize that their lack of detachable parts made it challenging to achieve complete cleanliness. Upon contacting the manufacturer, Yeti, he was advised to boil the bottles in hot water for five to ten minutes. To his surprise, he discovered a significant accumulation of black mold around the rubber seal after following this advice.
Expressing his concern, he emphasized the importance of regularly inspecting such bottles, especially when used by children, to identify any hidden buildup or contamination that may go unnoticed. The TikTok video has garnered over 130,000 likes, with numerous users sharing their own encounters with addressing mold in their water bottles.
While some users lamented the prevalence of mold in many drinking bottles, acknowledging the difficulty in finding ones that are mold-resistant, others reported minimal mold issues with their bottles, attributing it to regular cleaning practices. Consumer watchdog Which? recommends parents position children’s water bottles thoughtfully in the dishwasher to prevent mold buildup. For bottles with intricate parts, washing them in hot water with washing-up gloves or using a bottle cleaning kit with pipe cleaners or sterilizing solution are suggested as effective cleaning methods. Adhering to the manufacturer’s washing instructions specific to the bottle model is also advisable.
