Upon moving to Vancouver from Johannesburg in 2018, Caitlyn Moony had high hopes for her new home. Despite initially being captivated by the city’s natural beauty and charm, she soon realized that the reality did not quite align with her expectations. Struggling to find employment due to the lack of local connections and the elusive “Canadian experience,” she found herself working long hours in a basement suite, grappling with high rent and noisy neighbors.
As time passed, Moony’s initial enchantment with Vancouver faded, replaced by feelings of resentment and isolation. She yearned for the sense of community she had experienced in other places she had lived. Feeling adrift in a city that seemed devoid of the crowds she sought to connect with, she eventually sought solace in London, where the bustling energy of the city offered a temporary escape from her loneliness.
However, Moony soon realized that Vancouver had left a lasting impression on her. Despite its imperfections and challenges, she found a sense of calm and self-discovery in the city’s quieter, more introspective atmosphere. Reflecting on her experiences, she came to appreciate the unique relationship she had developed with Vancouver over time – one that allowed for mutual understanding and respect.
Returning to Vancouver after her time in London, Moony found herself drawn back to the city, seeking a second chance at building a life there. Embracing the city’s quirks and complexities, she expressed a desire to reconnect with Vancouver on a more genuine and meaningful level, willing to accept both its flaws and its strengths. As she unpacked her bags and stepped back onto Vancouver soil, she hoped for a renewed bond with the city that had challenged, shaped, and ultimately welcomed her back home.
