Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg has advocated for reduced U.S. restrictions on open-source AI to enhance competition with Chinese competitors. The company unveiled a smaller and more customizable AI model called Muse Glimmer, geared towards running tasks on standard computers with a single graphics card, catering to the growing demand for AI systems that operate directly on users’ devices.
Zuckerberg announced the forthcoming release of larger AI models in a video post accompanying a 14-page essay emphasizing the importance of democratizing AI access. Open-weight models differ from closed models by making their core components, known as weights, accessible for customization, making them more affordable and adaptable for users. Meta’s stock saw a 3% increase in premarket trading following the AI model announcement. The company also plans to unveil Muse Spark 1.2, its advanced model developed by a specialized team. Zuckerberg emphasized the need for the U.S. to streamline policies to foster leadership in open-weight models and AI infrastructure development.
In response to growing concerns over data center expansion, Meta launched a $1 billion fund to address community apprehensions, aiming to support local communities affected by its data infrastructure projects.
