Summer music festivals have long been venues where individuals opt to consume psychedelics and other substances. A team of researchers is delving into the implementation of harm reduction practices at these events to glean valuable insights. Erika Dyck, a history professor at the University of Saskatchewan and a Canada Research Chair, has dedicated twenty years to studying psychedelics. She highlighted that music festivals, being common settings for substance use, are also focal points for harm reduction initiatives aimed at caring for attendees and mitigating risks.
Kenneth Tupper, an adjunct professor at the University of British Columbia, is part of the research team investigating these practices. He noted that drug checking initiatives originated in Canada within the context of music festivals, particularly in response to the toxic drug crisis declared a public health emergency in British Columbia around 2016. The use of portable testing instruments like the FTIR spectrometer at festivals such as Shambhala and Bass Coast has been instrumental in enhancing safety measures.
Recently, the Regina Exchange Folk Festival made its debut, emphasizing the importance of harm reduction and safety preparedness. Zandra Kaszas, the festival’s artistic director, stressed the proactive approach taken to ensure a secure environment for attendees. In addition to standard safety measures like security and hydration stations, the festival collaborated with the Nēwo Yōtina Friendship Centre to provide naloxone services for potential overdoses.
Tupper highlighted the significance of drug testing services in empowering individuals to make informed decisions about substance use. He emphasized that counseling support can be life-saving in helping individuals navigate their experiences. Dyck emphasized the research project’s goal of documenting and preserving the harm reduction strategies employed at festivals to contribute to ongoing conversations and enhance future initiatives.
The project seeks to establish a repository of valuable insights that are often overlooked in traditional archives but hold significant relevance in shaping harm reduction efforts moving forward.
