Jannik Sinner, currently ranked as the top men’s tennis player globally, has pulled out of the Cincinnati Open due to a knee injury. Sinner, who last competed at Wimbledon where he secured his second consecutive title, also withdrew from the National Bank Open in Montreal last week. The 24-year-old player boasts five Grand Slam victories and is only a French Open win away from achieving a career Grand Slam.
In a statement relayed by tournament officials, the Italian athlete expressed his disappointment at having to withdraw from the Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati. Sinner cited ongoing discomfort in his right knee despite extensive efforts with his medical team. He stated that he is not yet fit to compete and is looking forward to returning next year while focusing on preparing for the upcoming U.S. Open.
This withdrawal announcement from Sinner comes shortly after Carlos Alcaraz also decided to pull out of the Cincinnati event due to a persistent wrist injury. Consequently, fans at Cincinnati will miss witnessing the top two players in the world during the men’s singles competition commencing this Saturday. Sinner had clinched the Cincinnati title two years ago, a tournament that traditionally precedes the U.S. Open and acts as a key warmup event. His victory in Cincinnati was followed by a triumph at the U.S. Open. Last year, Alcaraz defeated Sinner in the U.S. Open final, and the 23-year-old Spaniard is set to defend his title when the tournament’s main draw begins on August 30.
