Another Sikh Canadian activist has recently received a “duty to warn” notification, raising doubts about the Carney government’s claims of addressing Indian government interference and transnational repression. Inderjeet Singh Gosal disclosed that he was contacted by the RCMP and handed the letter on August 14 in Caledon, Ont. These letters are issued by law enforcement when there is credible intelligence indicating a threat to a citizen’s life, without detailing the nature of the threat.
Gosal confirmed that the RCMP offered to enroll him in a witness protection program, emphasizing that he declined the offer as he is not involved in any criminal proceedings but remains committed to advocating for the Khalistan referendum. Khalistan refers to the proposed independent Sikh homeland in India’s Punjab region, which has sparked controversy and opposition from the Indian government.
Following the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June 2023, who was leading the Canadian referendum campaign, Gosal was appointed as his replacement. This latest warning marks the sixth official police notice that Gosal has received.
The issuance of these warnings aligns with the ongoing tensions between Canada and India, exacerbated by Nijjar’s assassination and subsequent diplomatic fallout. Despite efforts to mend relations and focus on economic ties with India, duty to warn letters continue to be issued. The recent letter received by Gosal did not directly implicate the Indian government but highlighted a threat against his life without providing specific details.
Canada has faced scrutiny from UN rapporteurs regarding the protection of Sikh activists, such as Gosal and Moninder Singh, amidst claims of ongoing threats. While the Canadian government has assured the UN of its commitment to safeguarding citizens, concerns persist among those targeted by the Indian government.
Gosal expressed gratitude for the RCMP’s efforts in informing him about the threats but criticized the Carney government’s approach. He emphasized his determination to proceed with organizing the upcoming referendum despite the risks posed by external pressures. India has refuted any involvement in violent acts in Canada, including the Nijjar case.
Gosal remains resolute in his activism, undeterred by potential threats, and is focused on the democratic exercise of the Khalistan referendum.
