“Countdown to Alberta Referendum: Stay or Separate?”

Date:

In just 60 days, Albertans will have the chance to shape the province’s future by answering 10 crucial questions. While nine questions focus on immigration and constitutional reform, it is the 10th question that is garnering increasing attention – should Alberta stay in Canada or proceed with a second referendum on separation.

As the countdown continues, both sides are racing against time to sway public opinion. Veteran pollster Janet Brown notes that support for separatism has consistently lagged behind those in favor of maintaining ties with Canada. With little fluctuation in data over the past eight years and a small percentage of undecided voters, Brown believes the referendum campaign is now more about mobilization than persuasion.

Various groups are vying for attention in the ongoing debate. Let’s take a closer look at the strategies of four prominent entities as they gear up for the next phase of the campaign.

**Let Alberta Decide**
Keith Wilson, representing the pro-independence Let Alberta Decide group, acknowledges the uphill battle they face despite strong support in rural areas. With a major rally planned at the Alberta Legislature and targeted social media messaging, the group is focusing efforts on mobilizing supporters, especially in key urban centers like Calgary and Edmonton.

**Forever Canadian**
Thomas Lukaszuk, leading the Forever Canadian campaign, emphasizes grassroots efforts with volunteers spread across every Alberta municipality. The campaign plans to host large rallies and distribute lawn signs to promote unity and Canadian pride.

**Alberta Prosperity Project/Stay Free Alberta**
The Alberta Prosperity Project, which spearheaded the citizen initiative petition for Alberta’s separation, is gearing up for advanced polls and town halls leading up to the referendum. The group aims to maximize voter turnout by engaging members to ensure their friends and neighbors cast their votes.

**Alberta’s Voice**
Alberta’s Voice, led by Stephen Carter, is focusing on fundraising to compete with separatist groups. The campaign aims to sway undecided voters and achieve a significant majority in favor of staying in Canada. Plans include an advertising campaign, voter mobilization training, and a captain system to boost overall turnout.

With the referendum fast approaching, residents can also opt for mail-in voting, with special ballot packages requiring submission by 5 p.m. on Oct. 16, as per Elections Alberta.
