Serita Thurton netted two goals in the first half as the Calgary Wild, sitting at the bottom of the standings, pulled off a surprise victory against the Ottawa Rapid, the top team in the league, with a 4-3 win in Northern Super League action at McMahon Stadium on Saturday.
Kahli Johnson opened the scoring for the hosts in the 15th minute, followed by Thurton doubling the lead approximately 13 minutes later.
Ottawa’s Jung Min-Young found the back of the net in the 38th minute, and Melanie Forbes equalized at 2-2 just before the end of the first half.
Thurton struck again just before halftime, securing her second goal of the match and paving the way for the Wild’s triumph.
Jorian Baucom also added a goal for the Wild, who now have a record of two wins, 12 losses, and two draws.
Jyllissa Harris converted a penalty in the 86th minute for the Rapid, who now have 10 wins, three losses, and three draws, seeing their 10-game unbeaten streak come to an end.
Despite controlling 54% of possession, the Rapid were outshot 16-13 (9-6 on target). The Wild earned six of the 11 corners in the match, while Ottawa received one yellow card and one red card.
In another match, Jessica De Filippo scored in the 57th minute to level the score and then added a second goal five minutes into stoppage time in the second half, leading the Vancouver Rise to a 2-1 victory over the Halifax Tides at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, B.C.
Jordyn Rhodes had given the fourth-place Tides a 1-0 advantage with a goal in the 19th minute.
The Rise, in fifth place, dominated possession with 56%, outshooting the Tides 18-13, with a 6-4 advantage on target. Halifax took four of the six corners in the game, while Vancouver received two of the three yellow cards issued.
