An explosion in close proximity to a train station in Germany led to a temporary closure of the transport hub in Augsburg on Wednesday morning following the discovery of a suspicious object. Police later confirmed that the object was harmless, allowing the station to reopen at 10 a.m. and resume train services. Two individuals, a 17-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man from Ukraine, sustained minor injuries in the blast which occurred around 3:15 a.m. in a passageway near the station.
A subsequent non-exploding suspicious object found at the main train station prompted its closure at 8:30 a.m., with explosives experts from the Bavarian state criminal police office investigating the scene. Police spokesperson Timo Küfner assured that trains were back in operation post the incident, while stating it was too early to determine a motive for the explosion.
Reports indicated disruptions to road traffic and public transportation around the station in the early hours. Although initial speculation suggested a hand grenade detonated near a jewelry store early in the morning, it was inferred that the train station was not the primary target of the incident.
Augsburg, located in Bavaria and home to approximately 308,000 residents, is situated about 78 kilometers northwest of Munich. The recent events in Augsburg coincide with the German government’s accusation against Russia for an attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport last month. The drone, carrying explosives, was discovered near a Ukrainian aircraft on August 4, heightening concerns over security threats posed by such incidents. Western officials have long criticized Moscow for alleged acts of sabotage and disruption across Europe aimed at destabilizing nations and influencing support for Ukraine.
