“FIFA President Infantino to Run for Re-election Amid Criticism”

Date:

FIFA announced on Sunday that its President, Gianni Infantino, is set to run for re-election amid mounting criticism regarding his failed initiative to offload shares in the World Cup. Despite calls for his resignation, Infantino intends to vie for a fourth term in office until 2031.

Confirming Infantino’s candidacy for re-election in 2027, a FIFA spokesperson reiterated that there have been no alterations to the President’s decision. UEFA, the governing body for European soccer, has spearheaded the campaign for Infantino’s removal, expressing a loss of faith in his leadership and even threatening to boycott FIFA competitions, including the World Cup. Notably, several national associations, such as the English FA, have withdrawn their backing for Infantino’s re-election bid.

When questioned about his future at the commencement of the Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland, Infantino declined to provide any comments, stating that there will be an appropriate time and place for such discussions. FIFA has acknowledged its missteps in the contentious proposal to commercialize World Cup profits and has pledged to prevent similar errors in the future. However, these efforts have not alleviated the mounting pressure on Infantino’s tenure.

The deadline for candidates to enter the upcoming presidential race is November 18, precisely four months before the scheduled vote.
