Canada’s men’s basketball team is gearing up for the upcoming 2027 FIFA World Cup qualifiers with a notable roster announcement made by Canada Basketball general manager Rowan Barrett. The team, led by Atlanta Hawks guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker, will also feature Luguentz Dort, Trae Bell-Haynes, Khem Birch, Marcus Carr, Mfiondu Kabengele, Kaza Kajami-Keane, Koby McEwen, David Muenkat, Nick Ongenda, Kelly Olynyk, Jackson Rowe, Thomas Scrubb, Keevan Veinot, and Kyle Wiltjer.
The team is set to face Panama in Panama City on Thursday before hosting Argentina in Quebec City on Monday. Notable absentees from the lineup include Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Dillon Brooks. Barrett explained that various factors such as injuries, fatigue, contract issues, and training camp commitments influenced the selection process.
With a pool of over 50 committed athletes, Canada Basketball aims to build a well-rounded team for the qualifiers. The team is currently ranked fifth globally and holds a perfect 6-0 record in Group F following previous victories over Jamaica and Puerto Rico. The top three teams from each group and the best fourth-place team will secure a spot in the 2027 World Cup in Qatar.
Alexander-Walker, fresh off a standout season in the NBA, is expected to bring his improved skills to the national team. Alongside him, veteran player Kelly Olynyk will provide leadership and experience. The team is looking to balance inside and outside players for the qualifiers, emphasizing the importance of execution and toughness on the court.
