Dylan Cease, a former theatre enthusiast during his high school days, has recently showcased his artistic talents at the Art Gallery of Ontario, despite his lack of art education back then. The AGO shop introduced a special retail collection featuring Cease’s painting inspired by Toronto, displayed in Walker Court. This collection includes various items such as prints, postcards, T-shirts, sweatshirts, and totes, with all proceeds aimed at supporting AGO’s charitable initiatives.
When asked about his artwork, Cease humbly mentioned his uncertainty about what his high school teachers would think, given his focus on theatre rather than visual arts. Speaking to a group of youngsters from summer camps about art, Cease expressed his surprise at the overwhelming response from Blue Jays fans, both young and old, who lined up in anticipation at the gallery.
Reflecting on his newfound passion for painting, Cease highlighted his delight in exploring this creative outlet, particularly as a contrast to the intense nature of baseball. The 30-year-old pitcher, who recently signed a lucrative contract with the Blue Jays, emphasized his interest in immersing himself in Canadian culture and history as he continues to pursue his artistic endeavors.
Cease’s artistic journey began in 2022, with his Toronto piece now prominently displayed in Blue Jays manager John Schneider’s office. Looking ahead, Cease plans to delve into oil painting, viewing art as a form of personal expression and relaxation away from the competitive world of baseball. Regardless of where his art ends up, Cease finds joy and fulfillment in the process of creating and exploring his artistic talents.
