Dan Levy expressed his disapproval of Shane Gillis’s recent comments on “Saturday Night Live,” particularly the derogatory remarks made towards women wearing short shorts at the gym. Without naming Gillis directly, Levy criticized the use of offensive language and stereotypes in the comedy show’s monologue.
In a social media video, Levy condemned the portrayal of women in such a manner, stating that labeling women based on their clothing choices as derogatory terms is unacceptable. He emphasized that this type of humor perpetuates harmful attitudes towards women and contributes to a culture of misogyny.
Levy, known for his role in “Schitt’s Creek” and having hosted “SNL” in 2021, highlighted the importance of men speaking out against such behavior and standing up against objectification and mistreatment of women. He stressed that societal complacency towards these issues enables a culture where women are vulnerable to harassment and assault.
The backlash towards Gillis’s comments coincides with ongoing discussions surrounding consent and accountability, exemplified by the recent controversy involving the Cornell 7 accused of gang rape and the support for their accuser, Jane Doe. Criticism of the joke was further fueled by the social context, prompting many to question the appropriateness of such humor, especially given the sensitivities around sexual assault.
Gillis, no stranger to controversy, has faced backlash in the past for making offensive remarks. Despite his recurring appearances on “SNL,” including the recent hosting gig, his history of controversial statements has drawn scrutiny from audiences and raised concerns about the boundaries of comedy and respect in public discourse.
