“Buck Martinez Inducted into Blue Jays Hall of Excellence”

Date:

John Albert (Buck) Martinez, a cancer survivor and a prominent figure in Toronto Blue Jays history as a catcher, manager, and broadcaster, was recently inducted into the team’s new Hall of Excellence. The induction ceremony took place on Saturday as part of the Blue Jays’ 50th season celebrations.

The Hall of Excellence was established by the Blue Jays to honor the franchise’s most significant contributors. The ceremony saw 11 honorees from the former Level of Excellence officially enshrined in the hall, which is located on the concourse behind right field at Rogers Centre.

During the pre-game festivities before the Blue Jays’ match against the Seattle Mariners, the 77-year-old Martinez expressed his gratitude for the honor, stating that he was overwhelmed by the magnitude of the occasion. Martinez, known for his extended tenure as a team broadcaster, retired from his broadcasting duties last winter.

Martinez recounted a touching moment when a newcomer, Brett Bateman, approached him under the stands to offer congratulations, acknowledging Martinez’s impact on the Blue Jays and their fan base. He also shared an anecdote about a memorable encounter with fans in England who recognized him by his voice, emphasizing the significance of Canadian fans to him.

Joining a prestigious group of Hall of Excellence inductees, including Jose Bautista, Paul Beeston, and others, Martinez was commended for his contributions to the team over the years. The Level of Excellence, where the names of honorees were previously displayed, will continue to be showcased within the stadium bowl for the remainder of the season before being relocated to a more prominent location next year.

The induction ceremony was attended by several Blue Jays luminaries, including Cito Gaston, Jose Bautista, and others, who joined Martinez to celebrate the occasion. Former teammate Dave Stieb praised Martinez for his calming influence on the team during his playing days, highlighting their special bond.

The Blue Jays emphasized that the Hall of Excellence aims to honor various individuals who have shaped the team’s legacy, including players, coaches, managers, builders, and broadcasters from past, present, and future generations, fostering a connection between fans and the team’s history.

Martinez’s career with the Blue Jays spanned multiple roles, from catcher and manager to broadcaster. Despite facing health challenges, including battles with cancer, Martinez’s impact on the team and its fans remains profound. His broadcasting career, which began while he was still an active player, saw him call over 4,000 Blue Jays games, and he has provided commentary for various media outlets.

In recognition of his significant contributions to baseball in Canada, Martinez was awarded the Jack Graney Award by the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2023, further solidifying his legacy in the sport.
