A severe rainfall in Istanbul has led to the closure of the city, causing flooding in various areas and resulting in the deaths of at least three individuals, as per officials’ reports on Thursday. The intense downpour on Wednesday submerged residences, commercial establishments, and thoroughfares, leaving vehicles stranded and causing widespread traffic disruptions in Turkey’s biggest urban center.
One victim, a 14-year-old, was fatally electrocuted at a park in the Fatih district after stepping into a puddle, while a 34-year-old individual in the Sariyer district slipped on a sidewalk, sustaining a fatal head injury. The Istanbul governor’s office confirmed the discovery of the body of a third victim near a park in the Kagithane district.
The city authorities reported three casualties and mentioned that four individuals were missing following the deluge. Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi stated that over 2,700 people trapped by the floods were successfully rescued across Istanbul. The Turkish meteorological agency has forecasted additional showers for Istanbul and its adjacent regions in the upcoming days.
