Adoptive Couple on Trial for Torturing Orphaned Siblings

Date:

Two orphaned siblings, whose story began with hope and the promise of a new home, found themselves in a nightmarish situation when a couple intending to adopt them subjected the boys to extreme torture, a court has revealed.

The older child, a 12-year-old known as LL, tragically endured his final moments in agony, screaming and vomiting in a locked basement as he tried in vain to escape. Allegedly, the prospective adoptive parents callously observed his suffering via a camera feed, ultimately leading to his death. The accused women are facing murder charges for the harrowing ordeal that LL endured under their care.

Becky Hamber and Brandy Cooney have denied charges of first-degree murder, as well as accusations of confinement, assault with a weapon, and neglecting the basic needs of LL’s younger brother, JL. Testifying during the trial, JL shed light on the horrific conditions he and his brother faced while in the women’s custody as they awaited adoption.

Prosecutors argue that the couple mistreated the children through neglect and fabricated behavioral issues to service providers. Conversely, the defense maintains that Hamber and Cooney did their best to care for the siblings, who had special needs, but lacked adequate support.

LL was discovered by paramedics in a dire state – emaciated, wet, and unresponsive in the basement of the couple’s Toronto residence. Despite efforts to save him, LL succumbed to his condition on December 21, 2022, appearing malnourished to the point of resembling a much younger child.

Testimony in court revealed that LL had been trapped in the basement for an extended period, crying, vomiting, and pleading to be released. Social worker Faisel Mohdi recounted the appalling conditions in which LL lived, including sleeping on a filthy cot soaked in vomit, allegedly neglected by the women and their family members.

Further investigations unveiled disturbing details, with the court learning that the couple purportedly subjected LL to demeaning treatment, including making him wear a wetsuit, regurgitate food, and endure physical and emotional torment while being monitored by cameras in his room.

Despite the tragic outcome, the defendants have yet to explain the circumstances surrounding LL’s death and the reasons behind his wearing a wetsuit. The pathologist’s report indicated severe malnourishment and dangerously low body temperature, though the exact cause of death remains undetermined.

JL, LL’s younger brother, testified to enduring years of abuse at the hands of Cooney and Hamber, describing a life filled with coercion, isolation, and mistreatment. The ongoing trial continues to unravel the horrors faced by the siblings in the care of the accused couple, with the proceedings expected to extend until December.
