Utah Couple Charged with Murder of Neglected Toddler

Date:

A mother facing accusations of neglecting her young child, who was discovered deceased in a squalid crib, reportedly expressed no remorse to law enforcement. In Utah, a couple has been charged with the murder of their 18-month-old daughter, Ruby Marie Murray, following investigations that revealed the child was frequently left unattended, inadequately fed, and made to sleep in a crib filled with trash and leftover food.

Carrie Marie Murray and Mitchell Chesnut Murray, aged 31, were apprehended and are currently in custody without bail. Both individuals are charged with aggravated murder and aggravated child abuse in connection with the tragic death of Ruby. The child was found unresponsive on March 19.

Carrie Murray, a trained nurse, informed detectives that she located her daughter deceased in the crib around 10:30 am and contacted emergency services. Despite her medical background, she reportedly declined to administer life-saving measures, believing Ruby was beyond help. In statements reviewed by Law and Crime, she mentioned feeling no guilt over the incident, attributing the child’s death to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, despite acknowledging Ruby’s age made it atypical for SIDS.

Video footage from a baby monitor portrayed grim conditions within Ruby’s crib, with multiple sippy cups and waffle pieces strewn around, alongside old food remnants. The room was kept excessively warm, contrasting with the toddler’s low body temperature, posing a risk of hypothermia. Investigators noted a constant playing of loud music in Ruby’s room, which hindered her sleep.

The parents admitted to feeding Ruby mostly toasted waffles, neglecting proper meals. Surveillance footage depicted Ruby spending extended periods in the crib, with minimal interaction from her caregivers. Mitchell Murray confessed to confining Ruby to the crib on “crib days,” a routine that isolated her while he worked. The investigation revealed Ruby’s death was due to dehydration and malnutrition, with authorities determining that the parents subjected her to harmful conditions.

Carrie and Mitchell Murray are detained without bond as inquiries into the case persist.
