Anthony Joshua has made a comeback to the boxing gym almost three weeks after being involved in a tragic car accident in Nigeria. The former two-time heavyweight world champion was a passenger in a Lexus SUV that crashed into a stationary truck on a major expressway near Lagos, resulting in the loss of two of his close friends and teammates, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele. Their funerals were held in London on January 4.
Joshua, who was in Nigeria for a holiday and family visit, had recently knocked out YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul before the accident. Following a few days of hospital treatment, he was discharged on New Year’s Eve, sparking speculation about his boxing future.
Despite the uncertainties, Joshua has posted workout photos on Snapchat, showcasing his training regimen, which he described as “mental strength therapy.” The images depict him engaging in various exercises, including lower leg workouts, stationary biking, and swimming.
Amidst reports that Joshua may retire due to the crash, his uncle revealed that the boxer had privately informed his family about his decision to step away from boxing. However, there is no official confirmation from Joshua regarding his retirement. Additionally, the driver of the vehicle, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, has been charged over the crash, facing multiple driving-related charges.
Eddie Hearn, Joshua’s promoter, emphasized that no discussions about Joshua’s fighting future were taking place. Hearn acknowledged the need for Joshua to take time away to heal emotionally and physically before making any decisions. He expressed support for Joshua’s recovery and emphasized that the boxer’s voice would be the ultimate determinant of his future in boxing.
