An 18-year-old named Henry Gendreau defied the odds to pursue his passion for animation at a college in Quebec. Despite being diagnosed with autism and initially non-verbal, Henry remained determined to achieve his goals. However, his dreams were shattered when the Quebec Education Ministry rejected his plea for a French-language exemption from high school, leading to his departure from post-secondary studies after just one semester.
Henry’s father, Daniel Gendreau, revealed that doctors advised the family to communicate exclusively in English with Henry following his autism diagnosis. The family faced challenges, including multiple relocations due to military service, which limited Henry’s access to French classes. Despite their sacrifices, the Education Ministry denied Henry’s exemption request, citing missed classes as a primary reason.
Researcher Marie-Eve Lefebvre emphasized the difficulties autistic students face in proving their inability to learn French, discouraging them from seeking exemptions. The burden of advocating for oneself can be overwhelming, especially for students with disabilities, potentially sending a message that their needs are not acknowledged.
Vice-president Christopher Craig of the Quebec English School Boards Association highlighted the frequent rejection of exemption requests, affecting students’ academic potential. Despite promises to streamline the process, the government has not made significant changes, leaving many students like Henry in challenging situations.
Henry, now enrolled in an online program in Ontario to earn his high school diploma, expressed his disappointment and called for improvements in the system to prevent others from experiencing the same obstacles. His father emphasized Henry’s hard work and determination, advocating for a fair and inclusive education system for all students.
