Canadian filmmaker Matt Johnson appeared relaxed last week, just four days before his wedding and eight days ahead of starting production on his upcoming movie. Johnson, casually dressed in a T-shirt and sweatpants, visited Toronto’s Revue Cinema to discuss “Tony,” the highly anticipated biopic centered on the early life of renowned chef and TV personality Anthony Bourdain.
Despite Bourdain’s iconic status and the public’s adoration following his tragic passing in 2018, Johnson seemed unfazed about portraying his story. Initially not considering a film about Bourdain, Johnson’s perspective shifted after meeting actor Dominic Sessa, who plays the lead role in the movie.
Sessa, 23, was cast as Bourdain in his early years, focusing on one summer in Provincetown, Mass., as outlined in Bourdain’s book “Kitchen Confidential.” Johnson and Sessa, both initially unfamiliar with Bourdain’s work, aimed to maintain an authentic portrayal of the young Bourdain’s journey into the culinary world.
By concentrating on Bourdain’s formative years, Johnson sidestepped the pressure of depicting the later, more established Bourdain that many fans idolize. “Kitchen Confidential” provided a narrative rich in themes of self-discovery, family dynamics, and the challenges faced by young men transitioning into adulthood.
The film, screening nationwide on August 14, delves into Bourdain’s early experiences, offering a fresh perspective on his life and making his story more relatable to his admirers. Johnson expressed a sense of collaboration with Bourdain through the filmmaking process, emphasizing the authenticity and connection they aimed to achieve with “Tony.”
