Two Canadian researchers have been recognized in a global image competition that showcases ecological research. The 2026 joint BMC Ecology and Evolution and BMC Zoology image competition honored 11 photographs taken by researchers worldwide at different career stages. The images capture animals in their natural habitats, scientists and students conducting ecological research, and various natural scenes.
Liam Brennan, a master’s student and photographer at the University of New Brunswick, won the competition’s research in action category with his photo titled “Intertidal education.” Allen (Haolun) Tian, a post-doctoral researcher affiliated with Queen’s University, Hangzhou Normal University, and Zhejiang University in China, claimed the award in the “protecting our planet” category with his image “A bridge between past and present.”
According to Brennan, images play a vital role in documenting research and communicating the importance of environmental education and ecological studies to the public. His winning photo, “Intertidal education,” was captured while overseeing undergraduate students monitoring coastal fish species in St. Andrews, New Brunswick. Meanwhile, Tian’s image “A bridge between past and present” showcases the Long Sault Parkway in the upper St. Lawrence River, emphasizing the impact of human activities on ecosystems.
Both photographers emphasize the role of images in fostering natural empathy and connecting people to environments they may not directly experience. Through their visually captivating work, they aim to raise awareness about the significance of ecological research and conservation efforts.
