Upon hearing that a UK city was hailed as the ‘world’s most beautiful,’ my curiosity was piqued, prompting a visit to see if it truly deserved such acclaim. Unfortunately, the unpredictable British weather, with its rain and icy winds, initially dampened my enthusiasm as I embarked on my journey to Chester. Despite my pessimistic expectations, within just thirty minutes of exploring the city, it became evident why it had garnered such a prestigious title.
Chester seemed to be frozen in time, with its entrance through the arches of the historic City Walls, a well-preserved circuit of Roman walls stretching nearly two miles, distinguishing them as Britain’s oldest, longest, and most intact. The opportunity to ascend steps and stroll along the top of these fortifications provided unparalleled views of the city and its surroundings on a roughly 45-minute loop.
Back on ground level, passing through the archways felt like stepping onto a movie set, with a unique charm emanating from the slightly skewed buildings lining the high street. The area was bustling with independent shops, bookstores, quaint cafes, and larger chain stores, offering a diverse blend catering to both locals’ routine shopping needs and tourists seeking souvenirs.
The timber-framed ‘Rows’ along the high street stood out, providing a covered walkway filled with distinctive boutiques and shops, offering a glimpse into a bygone era. Despite the weather, the high street remained vibrant with shoppers and tourists bustling about, a sight not commonly seen in many places today.
Aside from the City Walls, history enthusiasts could delve into Chester Cathedral’s beauty and the Roman Amphitheatre for a taste of intriguing historical eras. For TV fans, the Suspension Bridge leading into the city might ring a bell from its appearance in ‘Hollyoaks.’ Families looking for entertainment could venture to Chester Zoo, a short drive away, housing over 30,000 animals for a fun weekend outing.
Chester’s pub scene was equally captivating, boasting traditional low beam pubs, modern breweries, and upscale bars, drawing in locals for a night out in a more relaxed atmosphere compared to neighboring cities like Liverpool.
With its charming architecture and rich history nestled amid cobbled streets, it’s no surprise Chester was crowned the world’s most beautiful city last year. This accolade came after a study by Online Mortgage Advisor assessed destinations based on the ‘golden ratio’ principle, with Chester leading the pack due to an impressive 83.7% of buildings meeting the criteria.
Beyond the city center, a brief stroll reveals picturesque canalside walks and moorlands, offering a serene escape from urban life. Nature enthusiasts can’t miss Grosvenor Park, featuring ponds, lawns, and a viewing area with uninterrupted vistas of the Cheshire countryside.
Despite the challenging weather during my visit, Chester’s enduring charm left a lasting impression. I look forward to revisiting this stunning city, hoping for brighter skies on my next excursion.
