A worker in the construction industry, who decided to spend Christmas Day in Tenerife with friends instead of his wife back in the UK, shared the reasons behind his choice. While the festive season traditionally brings families together for celebrations, including activities like exchanging gifts and watching shows like Doctor Who, Dan opted for a different experience.
Dan clarified that his wife was not pleased with his decision to travel to Tenerife, but he felt compelled to accompany a friend who was facing difficult circumstances during the holidays. He explained that his friend’s house had been flooded, leaving him alone in temporary accommodation, prompting Dan to join him on the trip along with another colleague.
Detailing their trip logistics, Dan mentioned that the group of three friends secured affordable return flights to Tenerife, where they stayed in a quieter area on the island’s north side to stick to their budget. They rented a house and a car to explore different parts of the island, including popular tourist spots like Playa de Las Américas.
On Christmas Day, the trio enjoyed the sunny weather on the beach, although they struggled to find a traditional Christmas dinner option due to fully booked restaurants. Eventually, they settled for an Asian restaurant and savored a Thai red curry while admiring the sunset over the ocean.
Reflecting on his unconventional Christmas experience, Dan acknowledged that being away from home lacked the familiar warmth and coziness of a traditional UK Christmas. Despite the enjoyable trip, he missed the feeling of togetherness with loved ones during the holiday season.
In total, Dan spent £1,200 on the trip, while his friends, who indulged more in drinking and smoking, each spent around £2,500. He suggested Tenerife as a Christmas destination for those seeking a different holiday experience, particularly if they are alone or prefer a change from traditional family celebrations.
Dan emphasized that spending Christmas abroad might not suit everyone and recommended joining family celebrations at home while they are still possible. He noted that as one gets older, the opportunity to travel during the holidays without family may become more appealing.
Regarding his wife’s reaction to his decision, Dan mentioned that she was initially upset but understood his adventurous nature after being together for a decade.
