A man aged 25 from Cork has been accused of killing his mother and attacking his father. Identified as David Gallagher of Shrewsbury Downs in Ballinlough, he appeared in Cork District Court following a stabbing incident on Monday night. The authorities responded to a residence at Shrewsbury Downs around 9 pm on the same day.
Gallagher faced charges today for the murder of his mother, Stella Gallagher, 59, at their home on Monday. Additionally, he was charged with causing harm to his father, Brian Gallagher, 63, at the same location that night.
Stella Gallagher was taken to Cork University Hospital on Monday evening, where she was later pronounced dead. She was a chemical engineer who had a long-standing career at Eli Lilly in Cork.
During the court proceedings, Dt Sgt Niall Hayes from Blackrock Garda Station presented evidence of the arrest, charge, and caution of Gallagher. The accused did not respond when the charges were read to him at 1.27 pm. Gallagher had been held for questioning at Bridewell Garda Station.
Sgt John Kelleher mentioned that the police would request a custody remand at Cork District Court on November 26. Notably, bail is usually not granted at the district court level for murder charges.
Defense solicitor Shane Collins Daly requested free legal aid for Gallagher, who is currently unemployed, and this request was approved by Judge John King. The solicitor informed the court that Gallagher had received medical attention every eight hours while in custody and had been given medication during these intervals.
Mr. Collins Daly urged for urgent medical and psychiatric assessments for Gallagher upon his transfer to Cork Prison. Judge King accepted the request and ordered that the defendant receives necessary medical care while incarcerated.
The judge decided to remand Gallagher in custody for a video link appearance at Cork District Court on November 26.
