The family of Renee Good has filed lawsuits against the U.S. government and immigration officials, accusing them of wrongful death, conspiracy, and other violations in connection with the 37-year-old woman’s death at the hands of an immigration officer during a federal crackdown in Minneapolis.
The legal actions were initiated by Becca Good, Renee’s partner, and her brother, Brent Ganger. The U.S. Justice Department has not provided immediate feedback on the legal proceedings.
Renee Good, a mother of three, was fatally shot on January 7 amidst protests against immigration raids in the city. According to Becca Good, Renee had stopped their car on the street to show support for neighbors during an immigration operation.
Footage from a bystander shows Renee Good in the driver’s seat of a red SUV, blocking part of the road and honking the horn repeatedly. Immigration officers, with their faces covered, instructed Good to exit the vehicle. Despite some brief maneuvers by Good, the situation escalated, leading to fatal shots being fired by one of the officers.
The lawsuits seek damages for Renee Good’s wrongful death and the suffering she endured in her final moments, along with the losses inflicted upon her family. Additionally, the legal actions claim intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress on Becca Good.
The legal documents allege a conspiracy to violate civil rights and demand a jury trial. It asserts that the actions of the immigration officer who shot Renee Good were part of a planned effort to target specific ethnic communities and intimidate their allies.
The lawsuits name the involved immigration officer, Jonathan Ross, along with several other individuals, including White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller and former Homeland Security head Kristi Noem. The killing of Renee Good and another U.S. citizen, Alex Pretti, sparked national outrage and renewed calls for reforms in immigration enforcement.
