A father has been left paralyzed following a car accident shortly after dropping his children off at school. Mat Holten swerved to avoid a car that pulled in front of him, causing his vehicle to collide with a wall and flip over. While his wife managed to escape, Mat, age 45, was trapped in the wreckage with no feeling in his legs.
Emergency responders rushed Mat to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, where doctors diagnosed him with a severe spinal injury, leaving him paralyzed from the neck down. Despite undergoing extensive therapy at Salisbury Rehabilitation Centre over six months, Mat will never regain the ability to walk. His wife, Kristina, expressed shock and devastation over the situation, describing it as turning their world upside down.
The couple had dropped off their 12-year-old twins at school before the accident occurred. Mat’s vehicle rolled over during the crash, resulting in a severe neck injury. Kristina recalled feeling helpless as emergency services arrived, with Mat experiencing excruciating pain and loss of sensation in his lower body.
Mat underwent a 14-hour surgery at Derriford Hospital to address his neck injury but requires ongoing care at Salisbury Rehabilitation Centre, located far from their home. Once an aspiring volunteer driver for the NHS, Mat is now limited to using one hand and has difficulty with speech.
A GoFundMe campaign has been initiated by the family to cover expenses for travel, accommodation, and food while supporting Mat during his recovery journey. The fundraising effort has already raised over £2,000, providing some relief amidst the overwhelming challenges faced by the family.
