A woman shared her harrowing encounter with a bear while hiking in an area that had not seen a bear population in over 175 years. The incident took place in the Chiemgau Alps of Germany, where the hiker unexpectedly came face-to-face with a brown bear during daylight.
Describing the unsettling moment, the woman, who preferred to remain anonymous, recounted hearing unusual noises followed by a crow’s distressed call. Turning around, she was startled to see a fully grown brown bear standing upright only 200 meters away. Reacting swiftly, she ran from the scene without pausing to take a photograph.
Brown bears have been gradually reappearing in the Alps after a prolonged decline. While most breeding populations are concentrated in the Central Alps of Italy near the borders with Austria and Slovenia, some bears are believed to have migrated from the established Dinaric-Balkan population in the Balkans, totaling around 4,000 bears.
Although sightings of bears in the Chiemgau Alps are infrequent, there has been no evidence of a breeding population in the region since at least 1835. Notably, in 2006, ‘Bruno the bear’ gained notoriety in Germany for wandering the Bavarian countryside for seven weeks before being fatally shot near Zell in southern Germany due to public safety concerns.
In contrast, wild bear sightings have been absent in Britain for almost 600 years, with the last recorded sighting in Scotland in the 1430s and England in the 1240s. However, in regions where human settlements overlap with bear habitats, such as rural areas, bear attacks remain a genuine threat. For instance, a recent incident in Bella Coola, Canada, saw 11 people injured and two critically wounded after a grizzly bear attacked a group of schoolchildren and teachers.
Veronica Schooner, a mother whose child was among those attacked, shared that her son was in the class targeted by the bear, with one teacher sustaining severe injuries while attempting to fend off the animal. The teacher was promptly rushed to the hospital for treatment.
