Former military personnel faced loss of careers, ranks, and medals, leading to enduring mental health challenges. The dedication service, attended by over 100 current and former armed forces members, was a poignant moment following years of advocacy by the charity.
One of the attendees, Claire Ashton, a trans woman and former Royal Artillery gunner, shared her emotional journey of being bullied and dismissed in 1972. She expressed relief and hope for the future upon seeing the memorial. King Charles’s presence was deemed significant by Carl Austin-Behan, an ex-RAF firefighter dismissed in 1997 for his sexuality, as it symbolized progress in acknowledging past injustices.
Commander Roly Woods, a retired Royal Navy officer, highlighted the importance of the King’s attendance, signifying state recognition of past mistreatment. The memorial unveiling, accompanied by music from the Band of the Irish Guard, featured a sculpture resembling an opened letter, representing the incrimination faced by LGBT+ personnel.
Brigadier Clare Phillips emphasized the transition from secrecy and fear to pride and acceptance in her military career. The memorial serves as a tribute to the sacrifices and struggles of LGBT+ servicemen and women. Louise Sandher-Jones, the minister for Veterans and People, encouraged affected veterans to seek financial restoration and support available to them.
