Lidl, the popular supermarket chain, is venturing into the mobile phone industry with budget-friendly plans in a move that could lead to more savings for consumers beyond just lower petrol prices. To access these discounted plans, customers will need to have a Lidl Plus account.
This strategic move is part of a significant £600 million investment by Lidl, which not only includes offering mobile services but also entails the opening of 50 new stores nationwide. Following the trend set by other non-traditional players in the telecom sector like Revolut and Klarna, Lidl aims to introduce cost-effective phone plans.
While Lidl already provides this service in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, there are plans to potentially expand to the UK, US, France, and Spain, as per reports from the Financial Times. Schwarz Group, the owner of Lidl, has partnered with 1GLOBAL communications provider to operate as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), allowing Lidl to offer mobile plans using existing infrastructure.
Apart from its foray into the telecom market, Lidl is also expanding its physical presence by announcing the launch of over 50 new stores in the upcoming year, creating 2,000 new jobs. This expansion effort, part of the £600 million investment plan, includes locations such as Abbots Langley, Warrington, and Thornbury.
Schwarz Group will acquire a 9.9% stake in 1GLOBAL as part of the agreement, aligning with its broader digital strategy. The group has been making strides in the tech space through Schwarz Digits, focusing on cloud computing, cybersecurity, and investments in AI startups. Analysts foresee Lidl’s expansion into new markets intensifying competition for established telecom providers, particularly in the realms of pricing and convenience.
Employment minister Kate Dearden commended the move, emphasizing the creation of numerous quality jobs with fair wages that uplift communities across the country.
