McDonald’s enthusiasts are expressing their discontent over a viral post that revealed the price of a hash brown has soared to nearly £2 at certain outlets.
The post featured an image of a McDonald’s menu board displaying a £1.99 price tag for a hash brown at the specific restaurant the individual visited. Shared widely with over 459,000 views, the post was captioned, “£2 for a single hash brown. We’re calling it quits.”
Responses to the post varied. One person remarked, “It’s getting ridiculous. I don’t visit often, but it used to be a budget-friendly choice.” Another suggested, “For that price, you might as well get a sausage sandwich.” A third simply stated, “Unbelievable.”
Another commenter expressed, “Those hash browns are amazing, but £2 is excessive.” Someone else reminisced, “I remember when they were only 59p.”
In response to the escalating prices, a McDonald’s spokesperson clarified, “Many of our restaurants are independently owned franchises, allowing them to set their own pricing. While prices may differ, all strive to offer customers a top-notch dining experience and value for money.”
This price hike follows McDonald’s announcement of an upcoming increase in loyalty points required to redeem free items through MyMcDonald’s Rewards. Presently, popular items like a Big Mac or Nine Chicken Nuggets require 5,500 points, but starting March 17, the redemption threshold will rise to 6,500 points. Customers earn 100 points for every £1 spent at McDonald’s.
Furthermore, the points needed for items such as a Medium Coffee or Small Fries will rise from 1,500 to 2,000 points. A regular McFlurry or an Apple Pie will now cost 3,500 points, up from 2,500 points. For a Double Cheeseburger or McChicken sandwich, the points requirement will increase to 5,000 points, up from 4,000 points.
A McDonald’s representative explained that the loyalty scheme adjustments align with the escalating costs of food and supplies. They noted the introduction of sought-after items like Chicken Selects, Cheese sides, and a new Sausage Sandwich to enhance customer choices.
