A pilot who went missing on Friday has been tragically found deceased after search teams located his small aircraft submerged in the waters of the Kawartha Lakes region, as confirmed by the Ontario Provincial Police. According to a news release issued on Wednesday, debris from the aircraft was recovered from Wolfe Lake in Queen Elizabeth II Wildlands Provincial Park, situated northwest of Peterborough, Ontario. The actual aircraft was discovered submerged in the lake on Tuesday. The authorities have confirmed the pilot’s death, and plans are in progress to retrieve the plane.
The pilot, identified as David, aged 73, was reported missing when he did not return to Oshawa Executive Airport on Friday morning. Departing the airport in a self-constructed plane at 8:30 a.m., he was scheduled to be back by 9:30 a.m., as per information from Durham Regional Police. His last known location was near Kirkfield in the Balsam Lake area. Family members reported him missing to the police.
A comprehensive search operation was conducted by the Trenton Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, in collaboration with the Ontario Provincial Police, members from the City of Kawartha Lakes detachment, and other involved agencies. The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources also played a crucial role in locating both the aircraft and the pilot.
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB), an agency that investigates transportation incidents, including air accidents, is currently looking into the circumstances surrounding the crash. The TSB has dispatched an investigative team to the vicinity of Minden Hills, Ontario, to examine the accident involving the privately registered small plane.
Durham police had identified the pilot only by his first name and had described him as an experienced aviator known to fly regularly in the area south of Kawartha Lakes and north of Lake Scugog.
The Ontario Provincial Police expressed their heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the pilot and acknowledged the public for their assistance and support throughout the search mission.
