“Populations Soar: Ladybugs in Saskatchewan Prep for Hibernation”

Date:

Ladybugs have been highly visible throughout Saskatchewan this month as they prepare for hibernation, experts report. According to Georgiana Antochi-Crihan, the City of Saskatoon’s entomologist, ladybugs experience fluctuations in population, with the current period being a notable increase in their numbers. Antochi-Crihan emphasized that the availability of food plays a crucial role in the ladybugs’ population surge.

These beneficial insects primarily feed on aphids, scale insects, mealybugs, and other pests. While Regina has not seen a significant rise in ladybug numbers this year, Ashley Thompson, the manager of parks technical services for the City of Regina, noted a high aphid population, which supports the survival of ladybugs.

Vesna Fa in North Battleford also observed a substantial presence of aphids this summer, attracting ladybugs to her garden. Fa, the executive director of Midwest Food Resources, emphasized the importance of preserving ladybugs as they are beneficial allies in combating pests.

Candace Savage, chair of Wild About Saskatoon, praised the province’s diverse ladybug population for its environmental contributions. Antochi-Crihan mentioned that Saskatchewan is home to approximately 75 ladybug species, including native and introduced varieties. The seven-spotted lady beetle, a common introduced species identifiable by its seven spots, thrives in the region.

As ladybugs prepare for winter hibernation, they are currently congregating in warm areas, such as the sides of buildings, in Regina. Antochi-Crihan explained that ladybugs possess unique survival mechanisms, including producing antifreeze compounds to endure the harsh prairie winter. The ladybug population is expected to increase significantly next spring as they emerge from hibernation.
