The high-speed Poseidon torpedo, recently tested by Russian authorities, is built to carry a nuclear warhead and is propelled by its atomic reactor. Russian experts suggest that this weapon could potentially generate tidal waves and devastate islands and coastal regions, positioning it as a critical asset in the event of a global conflict.
Russian state television has advocated for deploying the Poseidon against the UK amid escalating tensions between the two nations. Echoing the Kremlin’s rhetoric, the state TV warned of dire consequences, asserting that Britain would cease to exist if the Poseidon were to be unleashed. Notably, a wealthy Putin supporter, Vladimir Solovyov, issued chilling threats, cautioning the British to prepare for the worst and suggesting that they might need to learn to survive underwater.
Solovyov further stoked fear by questioning the British ability to withstand a Poseidon attack, labeling the weapon as a doomsday device. While advising the evacuation of Russian diplomats in London and Edinburgh to avoid potential strikes, he expressed indifference towards Russian expatriates in London who have turned against their homeland.
Solovyov is part of a cadre of well-paid Kremlin-aligned media figures who disseminate propaganda aimed at stirring animosity towards Western countries, particularly Britain. Putin himself lauded the Poseidon’s capabilities, highlighting its successful launch and nuclear power plant activation as significant achievements. The Russian president boasted that the Poseidon surpasses even the powerful Sarmat missile in destructive potential.
Initial reports suggested that the Poseidon could reach speeds of up to 115mph underwater and operate at depths exceeding 3,000ft. Designed to carry massive nuclear warheads of up to 100 megatons, the Poseidon poses a grave threat with its capacity for catastrophic destruction.
