“Residents of Nepean Fear Rising Flood Threat”

Date:

A resident of Nepean, Aroha DeForest, has been living in her home since the 1990s and started using sandbags after her property was flooded in 2023. Following the unprecedented rainstorm on Canada Day, she now considers the sandbags a permanent fixture in her laneway. DeForest expressed that like many in Ottawa’s west end, they feel anxious about severe weather alerts for tornadoes or heavy rain.

Recent heavy rainfall of 23.5 millimetres on Monday led to renewed flooding in parts of the city, causing distress for residents, including DeForest. She mentioned that the constant threat of flooding has made them vigilant, with neighbors coordinating to ensure someone is always monitoring the situation.

DeForest highlighted the fear that comes with each forecast of rain, unsure if their homes will be affected again. Residents, including Wesley Bova, shared similar concerns, with Bova emphasizing the lingering worry after the previous flood and the dread that accompanies dark skies.

City officials reported that areas like College, Bay, and Knoxdale-Merivale wards were severely impacted by the Canada Day flooding, prompting calls for increased support from residents and local councilors. Knoxdale-Merivale Coun. Sean Devine acknowledged the ongoing challenges faced by many households and emphasized the need for improved response strategies for future extreme weather events.

As the city evaluates its response to the recent storms, Devine stressed the importance of asking difficult questions about the necessary investments and sacrifices to mitigate such risks. While residents remain on edge, hoping for swift government action, the looming threat of another significant flood continues to weigh heavily on their minds.
