“Student Shoots Classmate, Streams Tragedy Live”

Date:

A tragic incident unfolded at a high school in the southern Philippines, where a student armed with two pistols took the life of a fellow student before turning the weapon on himself. The harrowing event, which was live-streamed using a body-worn camera, occurred at the Ateneo de Zamboanga university campus in Zamboanga city, leading to the death of the shooter and injuries to two others.

The assailant, identified as Mohammad Mael Jalani, a Grade 9 student, first targeted a teacher but missed, then proceeded to shoot a student on the fourth floor before ending his own life on the fifth floor. The attack was broadcast on Facebook Live, capturing the chilling moments as it unfolded.

City officials and police swiftly responded to the scene, evacuating hundreds of students from the high school building as chaos ensued. The incident has shocked the community, prompting a thorough investigation into the motives behind the violent act.

Zamboanga City Mayor Khymer Adan Olaso confirmed that the shooter had taken his own life, bringing a devastating end to the tragedy. The high school building, where the shooting occurred, is part of a secure campus within the larger Ateneo de Zamboanga university complex.

Following the incident, the university suspended classes at all levels for two days, emphasizing the need for safety and security within educational institutions. The authorities are closely examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting, while urging the public to refrain from sharing unverified information that could escalate tensions.

In a distressing revelation, it was disclosed that one of the pistols used by the shooter belonged to his father, a Bureau of Customs police commander. The Bureau of Customs deputy commissioner recommended disciplinary action against the father for failing to secure the government-issued firearm properly.

While gun-related crimes are not uncommon in the Philippines due to the widespread availability of unlicensed firearms, school shootings remain infrequent. The tragic incident comes just months after a previous school shooting in Tacloban city, highlighting the need for enhanced security measures to prevent such senseless acts of violence in educational settings.
