After a relatively mild and wet start to November, the United Kingdom is preparing for a spell of wintry weather. Weather forecasts suggest that temperatures will drop significantly in the upcoming days, with a cold spell set to affect a large part of the nation by mid-month.
Chilly mornings and widespread frost may extend as far south as Cornwall, with temperatures expected to reach -2C in regions of Wales, the West Midlands, and South West England. The most recent WXCharts map indicates that central and western Wales will encounter the coldest conditions, with early morning temperatures potentially decreasing to -2C around 6am.
In other areas, Bath is forecasted to undergo similarly freezing weather, while the Midlands will hover around 0C. The south coast will not escape the cold either, with Southampton anticipated to experience around 0C in the early hours, and Devon, Plymouth, and Cornwall expected to drop to approximately -1C as the cold air mass moves southwards.
WX Charts has also projected that temperatures will stay below zero at noon on Saturday, November 15. The Met Office notes that the coldest November in the UK’s history was in 1919, with an average temperature of just 2.3C.
During that same month, Braemar in Aberdeenshire recorded a remarkable -23.3C on November 14, 1919, marking the lowest daily minimum temperature ever recorded in the UK for November. The Met Office’s extended forecast for the period from Sunday, November 8 to Tuesday, November 18 anticipates continued changeable and occasionally unsettled weather, dominated by low pressure systems.
The forecast suggests further intermittent rain showers, with western regions likely to be the wettest initially. Additionally, there may be instances of overnight fog that could linger through the day. A shift to a more stable weather pattern is becoming increasingly likely around the 11th or 12th of the month, leading to drier conditions becoming more prevalent, with winds shifting to south easterly or easterly directions. Rain or showers are expected to be more concentrated towards the east, with temperatures likely to remain around average levels throughout the period.
