Donald Trump has conveyed to Volodymyr Zelensky that he must approve his peace proposal or be prepared to continue the conflict with Russia, responding harshly to Ukraine’s apprehensions.
During a press interaction, Trump was asked for his opinion on Zelensky’s remarks regarding the peace deal crafted to resolve the ongoing war.
Zelensky had characterized the peace plan as a challenging decision for Ukraine, presenting a dilemma between compromising dignity or jeopardizing a vital partnership.
In reaction to Zelensky’s stance, Trump asserted that Zelensky must approve the plan, suggesting that if not, Ukraine should persist in fighting. Trump emphasized the necessity for Zelensky to eventually accept the terms, recalling a previous conversation where he mentioned Zelensky lacking leverage.
Trump specified that the upcoming Thursday deadline would be suitable for Zelensky to sign the 28-point peace accord. However, Zelensky has expressed concerns that endorsing the plan would result in a loss of freedom, dignity, and justice for Ukraine.
The leaked details of the plan outline provisions such as Ukraine yielding control of sections in the eastern Donestsk region, downsizing its military forces, and committing to refrain from joining NATO.
In contrast, Zelensky affirmed his intent to present counterarguments, persuade, and suggest alternative solutions.
The proposal reportedly involves negotiations between Washington and Moscow, appearing to favor Russia’s interests. It mandates a reduction of Ukraine’s military personnel from approximately 880,000 to 600,000 troops and prohibits Ukraine from NATO membership.
Furthermore, the plan guarantees Ukraine’s sovereignty and mandates elections to be conducted within the country within 100 days.
Additionally, the 28-point initiative advocates for a dialogue between Russia and NATO to address security concerns and sets expectations that Russia will abstain from invading neighboring nations.
